4. Twin-walled polyethylene

This grade of polyethylene is flexible, though not as much as regular polyethylene. It comes in rolls or sheets, where the inner walls separate the sheets to create an internal air space. UV-treated, twin-walled polyethylene provides soft, diffused light. About 75% natural light is still able to penetrate.

5. Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate panels come in different thicknesses. They cover plastic frames well and can last over 15 years. While less expensive than tempered glass, polycarbonate is less durable and scratch resistant. It’s also less flexible than twin-walled polyethylene. However, like glass, single-walled polycarbonate does provide clear, undiffused light. Multi-walled polycarbonate panels are stronger and more insulative.

If coated with laminated acrylic sheets, polycarbonate releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Also, a lot of energy is required to dispose of polycarbonate (by burning).
